Paddleboarding Cala Bassa in Ibiza's Flat October Water
How to reach the cove without circling for a parking space, and where to hire a board once you are there. Plus the kitchens still serving after the lifeguards go home.
Av Bram VermeerBack roads, calas and Dalt Vila

Cala Bassa is a 250m arc of pale golden sand in a sheltered horseshoe, backed by low cliffs thick with juniper and pine. The flagship restaurant behind the beach closes for the 2026 season on Sunday 18 October; the Chiringo beside it serves breakfasts and lunches until 1 November. Nothing on the sand rents a paddleboard.
What the cove gives a paddler
Cala Bassa (Sant Josep) is open public beach, free to walk onto, with no door policy. The shallows are glassy turquoise over a gentle sandy bottom, and you launch straight off the sand. A wooden boardwalk runs onto the beach, and a small landing jetty sits at one end.

The cove faces west, held inside its horseshoe. Groups are fine on the sand. The squeeze is the car park behind it, which holds under 50 cars.

Hiring a board, because the beach has none
SUP Ibiza hands over rolled inflatable boards in carry bags at a shop counter, with double-action pumps and three-piece paddles. Hire is €45 for a full day. The hourly rate is listed as unavailable, so confirm by WhatsApp (+34 690 324 439) before you drive over. It is collect-and-go kit, so you take as many boards as you can carry.

Ibiza Ocean Adventures works at the waterline with bright inflatable SUPs and sit-on-top kayaks, paddles upright in the sand, a guide briefing the group before launch. Board hire is €30 per hour or €80 for a full day. They also run a guided Platges de Comte and Cala Bassa outing of 1.5 hours, in small groups or as a private booking, arranged over WhatsApp (+34 622 41 85 61). They publish no season dates, so message ahead in October.

SUP Paradise Ibiza (Sant Antoni) lays Fanatic rigid and inflatable boards along a floating pontoon at Club Nàutic Sant Antoni, moored yachts behind, flat sheltered bay water in front. Find it on pontoon F, mooring F-51. A standard board is €40 per hour or €75 for the day; the rigid Fanatic Fly is €60 per hour or €100 for the day. Lessons run for adults and children, and group rates go through +34 666 255 803.
Camping Cala Bassa sits on the approach road, pine-shaded pitches and simple wooden bungalows a few minutes' walk from the sand through low scrub. It lists paddle surf and boat rental alongside beds at €€, in units for two to five people with extra-guest options. Season rates are published annually. Confirm late-October availability, and any party larger than five, on WhatsApp (+34 619 984 044).

The small wooden pier at the far end of the sand belongs to Ibiza Jet Ski Beach, the only motorised watersports concession on the beach, open May to October from 09:00 to 19:00. An inflatable zodiac shuttles riders out to jet skis moored in open water beyond the swim zone. Guided runs go out in small groups with an instructor, €104 to €256 per tour, and there is a dedicated groups-and-companies channel. It does not hire paddleboards.

Driving in, or the boat from Sant Antoni
Parking behind the beach runs €5 to €10 in season. With under 50 spaces, arrive separately or come by boat.
Cruceros Portmany (Sant Antoni harbour promenade) loads blue-and-white open-deck day boats with shaded upper seating from a small ticket kiosk. The Sant Antoni to Cala Bassa run operates May through October, daily except Sundays. Morning departures are at 10:30 and 12:00, returns at 13:00 and 17:00. Tickets are €15 to €25 return, bought at the kiosk or on board. It is a walk-on service with no reserved seating, so a group travels unseated together.

Boat days with boards aboard
Ibiza Watersports sells from a wooden ticket booth, caseta 16, where the Sant Antoni promenade meets s'Arenal beach, boards and snorkel gear piled on the stern of a moored day boat. Shared departures are €55 to €65 per person, with paddleboards, snorkel kit and drinks included. A private charter starts at €390, and half-day hires for groups go through the same number (+34 671 033 833).

Float Your Boat Ibiza runs its own boats out of Passeig de la Mar in Sant Antoni: a large white motor catamaran with a sun deck and swim ladder, paddleboards and inflatable water toys trailing off the back platform at anchor. Stops include Cala Bassa and Platges de Comte, with boards, food and drinks included. It is €69 for adults and €25 for children. Groups of 10 to 100 go through their Utopia Boat Hire arm.

Departures run seven days a week, and the current season runs from 1 October 2026 to 29 October 2027. Book before you travel.
Paddling north to Cala Roja
Cala Roja is the realistic turnaround point for a paddle north out of the cove: red-brown wind-eroded rock dropping into deep clear water, with shallow sea caves at the waterline you can nose a board into. Steps and slipways are cut into the stone at two points, so you have somewhere to land.

It is a wild cove, unstaffed and free, with no facilities. Keep the party small and carry your own water. There is no shade and no lifeguard, and the only way out is back on the board.
Walking the cliffs to Torre d'en Rovira
Torre d'en Rovira is a squat round stone defensive tower from 1763, standing alone on low cliffs among wind-bent sabina scrub, open sea and the Conillera islets behind it. It sits midway on the signposted 6km cliff walk from Cala Bassa to Platges de Comte, which starts at the Cala Bassa car park and takes two hours.

The path is open, free and unstaffed, and any size group can walk it. The cliff edge needs care. Walk it before you paddle and you can read your route from above.
Platges de Comte on the same day
Platges de Comte (Cala Comte) steps down into the sea in flat ochre rock shelves above shallow turquoise, with two small sand bays either side of a rocky promontory and the islets Sa Conillera and s'Illa des Bosc squat on the horizon. Sea temperature here averages 23°C in October. Entry is free, parking is paid in season, and a bus links it with Cala Bassa from May to October.

The Cala Escondida eco-chiringuito at neighbouring Racó d'en Xic lost its concession and did not open in 2026. It has reopened at the quiet end of Platja d'en Bossa. Plan your lunch elsewhere.
Lunch at the cove and above Comte
CBbC Cala Bassa sets white-and-natural-wood sunbeds and canopied Balinese daybeds under umbrella pines right at the sand's edge, with the open-sided rustic wooden Chiringo shack and its thatched roof facing the water. Check which outlet you are booking before you commit to a date. Prices are €€€, bed and restaurant reservations go by phone or the CBbC site, and weekends are worth reserving even in October. Groups and large tables are taken.

S'Illa des Bosc (Platges de Comte) is a glass-fronted clifftop dining terrace looking straight across turquoise water at the islet it is named for, paella pans and whole grilled fish arriving on white linen. It is strong on bullit de peix and paella, at €€€. Hours are published by season rather than a fixed closing date. Confirm your table by phone (+34 971 806 161 or +34 663 753 959); they also take bookings online and seat group tables.

Sunset Cala Conta holds a whitewashed low-slung terrace on the rocky promontory between the two Comte bays, straw parasols and wooden tables facing west over open water to the islets. It was renamed in 2026, per Sant Josep's own venue register, and the old name will not find it in a booking system. Prices are €€€ and the terrace runs a live-music programme. Reservations and large tables go through their site or +34 661 34 72 22.

Best time to go in October
Go in the morning. The cove is west-facing and sees almost no swell most mornings, and that flat water is what the rest of this depends on. Sant Josep council rates Cala Bassa medium-risk, with lifeguard cover only to 15 October. A late-October paddle is unsupervised.
Pick a weekday if you want to arrive by boat. On a day when west-coast swell makes Cala Bassa lumpy, the Sant Antoni bay stays paddleable, and the yacht club pontoon is where you find a board on that water.
Who the paddle suits
It suits a paddler happy to carry a board in from the car park, or step off a boat with one, and spend a morning on shallow sheltered water. The cove asks nothing technical of you. Cala Roja asks only that you can paddle back.
Practical notes
Lifeguard cover ends on 15 October, the Sant Antoni boat skips Sundays, and the full club kitchen shuts mid-month while the beach shack keeps going into November. Confirm board hire by phone or WhatsApp before you travel, and reserve a weekend table. See the Ibiza guide and the Ibiza hotel search.

Can I rent a paddleboard on Cala Bassa beach itself?
No. The only watersports concession on the sand is the jet ski base at the pier, and it does not hire paddleboards. Bring a board in: collect-and-go hire from SUP Ibiza is €45 for a full day, and Ibiza Ocean Adventures charges €30 per hour or €80 for a full day.
Is there a lifeguard at Cala Bassa in late October?
Sant Josep council rates the beach medium-risk, with lifeguard cover only to 15 October. After that you paddle unsupervised. That matters most north of the cove at Cala Roja, which has no shade and no way back except on the board.
How do I reach Cala Bassa without a car?
Cruceros Portmany runs Sant Antoni to Cala Bassa from May through October, daily except Sundays. Boats leave at 10:30 and 12:00 and return at 13:00 and 17:00, and a return ticket is €15 to €25 at the harbour kiosk or on board. A bus also links Cala Bassa with Platges de Comte from May to October.
Will anything be open to eat at the end of October?
Yes. CBbC Central closes the 2026 season on Sunday 18 October, and Chiringo serves breakfasts and lunches until 1 November. S'Illa des Bosc publishes hours by season rather than a fixed closing date, so phone to confirm a table.
Is a boat trip better value than hiring a board?
Each suits a different sort of day. A board from Ibiza Ocean Adventures is €30 per hour or €80 for the day, or €45 for the day as collect-and-go kit. Shared boat trips with boards, snorkel gear and drinks run €55 to €65 per person, and Float Your Boat charges €69 for adults and €25 for children, food included.
